Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Merced public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Comprehensive General Plan Update
The city is crafting a new vision statement to guide Merced's growth over the next 20 years, built from community open houses, surveys, and advisory group meetings. Commissioners want it to also recognize high school and career technical education and the tech industry before it goes to the City Council.
Alcohol and tobacco sales near Joe Herb Park
The Merced Police Department received a $112,026 state grant to fund underage decoy operations and retail tobacco inspections.
Planning Commission support and procedures
Councilmember Smith proposed reforms to help the Planning Commission succeed: clearer legal standards in staff reports, a formal way for commissioners to refer policy questions to the council, business cards, city email, better training, and possibly a per-meeting stipend. Sent to the Ethics and Governance Committee.
Food Truck Regulation and Planning Commission Authority
The city has now approved ten multi-food truck locations, and commissioners worry too many are clustering around Main and 16th. They want staff to bring a proposed moratorium to the next meeting so the ordinance can be studied and possibly updated.
