State funding for Merced priorities
Assemblywoman Soria announced the state budget includes $1.5 million for a new fire ladder truck and $5 million for Bear Creek/Miles Creek flood work, plus funding for food security, small farmers, and water affordability programs that could benefit Merced.
Jobs and Economic Development
The city is recommending census tracts for the state's next round of federal Opportunity Zones, which offer capital-gains tax breaks to investors. Three tracts (downtown and South Merced) moved forward, but the Northeast Merced tract was tabled after concerns it would subsidize development that would happen anyway and pull investment away from areas that need it.
High-speed Rail Cost Estimates
The California High-Speed Rail project is way over budget, with costs potentially doubling from initial estimates. Officials are scrambling to find ways to cut expenses, but it's still a massive financial question mark for the state.
